Since then Honda has changed how the seal and are way better and cheaper to replace if there is any problems. Now, replace all that grease with a liberal amount of ALL-temperature, White Lithium Grease. Reassemble, and your shifting will be better. This works for all ES models except the Rincon. Adjust the cable so that it thinks you are pulling on the lever. There are two adjustment points. You might need to use both of them to get the cable tight enough to not need the lever.
