Jm stamp marlin.

Now I've only been into Marlin's a couple years but I've bought and sold a few and looked at a few hundred. I haven't seen one yet that didn't have the stamp. If the gun was pre-remlin then wouldn't it have the JM stamp. What you could have here is a JM Marlin that was sent back into the factory for repair. The receiver could have been entirely or partially replaced with NY made parts. I have seen this before on a JM era 336C 30-30.
